DOROTHEA SHIRER DODSON

Dorothea Shirer Dodson, 98, of Springdale, Ark., and formerly of Grinnell, died at the Maples Nursing Home in Springdale on Nov. 15, 2012.

The family will have a private burial at Violet Hill Cemetery in Horseshoe Bend, Ark.

She was born in Russell, Iowa, July 27, 1914, the daughter of Charles Howard Shirer and Charlotte May Milleson Shirer, and grew up on the family farm. She married Homer Martin Dodson on Oct. 24, 1937, and began keeping a diary in January of that year, continuing up until August 1986.

Dorothea and Homer lived in Chariton until the 1940s, when they moved to Grinnell, where being a stay-at-home mom was Dorothea's passion. She later went to work using her cooking skills as an employee in the Grinnell High School kitchen, where she worked until the couple left Grinnell in the 1970s to retire to Horseshoe Bend, Ark. She continued to live there after her husband's death, then moved to Springdale, Ark., in 2001.

She is survived by her children Karen Buffington of Springdale, Shirley Phillips of Grinnell, Connie Carlson of Grinnell and Robert Dodson of Bentonville, Ark.; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, four brothers, her husband, her daughter Donna and her son Roger (Ben).

Transcriber Note: I remember Mrs. Dodson when she worked in the Grinnell High School cafeteria. Also knew her daughter, Donna, who was a year behind me in high school. MH
