Dr. Darrell L. Cochran, DVM, age 80, of Oskaloosa, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 2010, at Oskaloosa Care Center. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Donald DeGlopper of the Central Reformed Church officiating. Burial was in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Memorials may be made to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
Darrell L. Cochran, son of Fred and Gladys Murphy Cochran, was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Guernsey. Darrell was a 1948 graduate of Montezuma High School, where he played football and basketball. He furthered his education at the University of Iowa, where he studied journalism for a year, before transferring to Iowa State University, where he studied veterinary medicine. Darrell received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State in 1956. While attending Iowa State, he worked for construction crews and as a waiter in the girl's dormitory to pay for his education. While waiting tables in Elm Hall, he met Maxine Onsager, a young woman from Northwood, N.D. They were married June 20, 1964 in Northwood. Darrell and Maxine returned to Montezuma, where Darrell began practicing with Dr. Cook.
Darrell met Dr. Lyons in Oskaloosa through his hobby of raising Weimaraner dogs, and in 1957, Darrell joined Dr. Lyons at his practice. Dr. Ron Goldsmith, Dr. Martin Roepke, Dr. Tom Donohue and Dr. Teresa Carmichael joined Darrell at Mahaska Veterinary Clinic over the years. He retired in 1992.
Darrell and Maxine were licensed private pilots and they enjoyed flying their Piper Colt and later their Cessna 172. Darrell was a member of the Oskaloosa Rotary Club for over 41 years and enjoyed the friendships and community awareness it afforded him. He also served on the Forest Cemetery Board of Directors and the Oskaloosa Airport Commission. Darrell enjoy fly fishing, participating in Nelson Pioneer Farm Days and his muzzle loader. He also enjoyed wood working; he made gun cases, bedroom sets, end tables, and among numerous other items, bug boxes for cub scouts. Darrell loved his many dogs, Duke and all his other dogs--each named Missy.
Darrell's family includes a daughter and her husband, Dr. Julie and Rod Anfinson of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son and his wife, Michael D. and Connie Cochran of Leighton; a granddaughter, Cassie Anfinson; three step-grandchildren, Dustin Hampton, and Lesley and Jennifer Anfinson; and a step-great-granddaughter, Kathleen Hampton.
Besides his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, on Nov. 17, 2004.
