EDNA EMILY COCHRAN

Edna Emily Cochran was born Nov. 19, 1894 on the family farm near Deep River and passed away March 22, 1987 in Inglewood, Calif. She was the daughter of John and Ida Evelyn Mayo Cochran, and granddaughter of William and Mary Jane Cox Cochran.

She was the last living member of her family of 8, including 5 brothers (Bill, Lee, George, Fred and Sam) and 2 sisters (Grace Cochran and Mary Cochran Lash). Edna is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Keith, Kenneth and Jack Cochran of Calif., Mary Lee McConnell and Ida Jean Smith of Kansas City, Enid Greenwood of Moline, Ill., Marie Koppes and Mike Cochran of Albuquerque, NM, Arlene Gellerman of Rock Island, Ill., Darrell Cochran of Oskaloosa, Max Lash of San Jose, Calif., Lucille Marsh and Newell Lash of Cedar Rapids, and Don Cochran of Hutchinson, Kas.; 43 grand nieces and nephews and 43 great grand nieces and nephews survive.

Edna attended the rural one-room school near the family farm and was graduated from Deep River High School. She attended Iowa Teachers College at Cedar Falls where she earned her teaching certificate and began her teaching career.

Upon the death of Carrie Van Nedom Cochran in 1922, Edna and Grace Cochran returned to the family farm and started caring for their three nephews Keith, Kenneth, and Jack and continued through their moved to Cedar Rapids in 1925. Edna received further training at the Cedar Rapids Business College.

Edna's employed as Secretary to the Manager of the Telephone Co. then extended over 25 years until her retirement. Edna and Grace continued to maintain the home and care for their nephews all those years. They moved to Inglewood, Calif. in 1951 and their three nephews built a new home for them in that city in 1952.

Graveside service was held Sept. 7 at Golden Rod Cemetery, Deep River. The Rev. Mary Margaret Thiel officiated and Watts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
