SERVICES TUESDAY

Jesse Strand, 77, of Rte. 2, Gilman, passed away early Sunday morning (Oct. 20) at Grinnell General Hospital East.

He was born Aug. 10, 1891, southwest of Gilman, the son of Gabriel and Torbor Thompson Strand. He attended the local schools of the Newburg and Chester areas.

On Feb. 10, 1916, he was united in marriage with Ruth Ingrid Somme in Oskaloosa. Two sons and a daughter were born to the couple -- Glen Strand, presently of Rte. 3, Grinnell; Lorraine, now the wife of Maj. Eugene Zucker of Sacramento, Calif.; and Lyle L. Strand of Marshalltown.

In addition to his widow and their children, Mr. Strand is survived by one sister, Mrs. Dena Eames of Grinnell; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and several other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, along with six brothers and three sisters -- George, Theodore, Alfred, Cornelius, Edwin, Mrs. Ida McClure, Nettie, and Hannah.

Mr. and Mrs. Strand had lived in the Chester area after their marriage, where the couple farmed. In 1920 they moved to the farm in the Gilman area where they made their home. He was a member of the Gilman Methodist church and was a member of the Farm Bureau. Mr. and Mrs. Strand observed their golden wedding anniversary on February of 1966.

Funeral services for Mr. Strand will b e held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gordon K. Vickery of the Gilman Methodist church officiating. Organ music will be provided by Mrs. Donald J. Renaud.

Casket bearers include Virgil Strand, Carlton Strand, Carroll Eames, Marion McClure, Clair Strand and Gifford Strand. Flower bearers will be Mrs. Mildred Jones, Mrs. Alice Sutton, and Miss Irene Weir.

Burial will be in the family lot at Stavanger cemetery north of Dunbar. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
