CODY ALWIN BROWN

SPEARFISH - Cody Alwin Brown, 29, Spearfish, SD, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, as a result of a mining accident.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1982, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Gregory Alwin and Mercedes Cafcules Brown. He attended school in Grinnell and graduated in 2001. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business management from Iowa State University in Ames in May 2006. Since then, he worked for Farm Bureau Insurance in Spearfish, SD, Wheeler Lumber in Whitewood, SD and Weston Drilling Company in Upton, WY.

Cody excelled in many sports throughout the years, but his true love was football. In his senior year, they lost in the final four for the Iowa High School Playoffs. The game went in to quadruple overtime and made history in the state of Iowa for the longest game. Number 63 will never be forgotten.

After graduation, he loved to go downhill skiing at Terry Peak with his family and friends. Cody, Bryce, Mark and Jeff were all the "fantastic four." He mostly loved spending time with family and friends, and always had his arms wide open and the grin on his face to help anyone in need.

Cody operated at two speeds - complete stop and full speed ahead. Since he was eight years old, he traveled from Grinnell to Spearfish to work summers with his beloved "second" family, the Christensens. There was never a time when Cody wasn't caring for his cousins as the "big brother" to Bryanna, Brynn and Bryce, or helping Uncle Bryce and Aunt Lanna at the campground. His love for Chris' Campground prompted him to move to Spearfish full-time in 2006.

Cody is survived by his parents, Greg and Dee Brown and Lanna and Bryce Christensen, brother Matthew (Megan) Brown; two aunts; one uncle; and 14 cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Bill and Mercedes Cafcules and George and Clara Brown.

As a dear friend put simply, "To live is the rarest thing you can do, as everyone else just exists."

Cody did more than just exist; he lived life to the fullest.

Visitation was from 5-7 P.M., Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels in Spearfish. Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish.

A celebration of Cody's life will be held in Brooklyn, IA on Monday, September 12, 2011, from 5:00 P,M, to 8:00 P.M. at Manatt's Community Center.

A memorial fund has been set in Cody's honor.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels & Crematory Service of Spearfish. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com.
