Ira C. Henry, 84, of Brooklyn, died Friday morning, April 25, 1997, in Grinnell Regional Medical Center of congestive heart failure.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, in the Nevenhoven Funeral Home in Brooklyn. Rev. Robert Cutbirth officiated. Eulogies were read by grandchildren. The organist was Bev Vaverka and the soloist was Vanessa Grimm. Casket bearers were David Coleman, Dwight Hensler, Jason Poeffel, Nathan Hall, Ira Hall and Erik Johnston. Burial was in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery.
Ira Charles Henry, son of William George Henry and Ida Mae Kingsley Henry, was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on May 14, 1912. He received his education in Missouri and Montezuma High School graduating in 1931. He started farming with his father and later he farmed for himself. He married Kathryn Odessa Ross on February 18, 1939, in the Brethren Church Parsonage, rural Brooklyn. In 1954, he started working at Amana and retired in 1976. After his retirement, he was the janitor at the Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn for 12 years and was a driver for HVAAA. For the past 31 years they have made their home in the Brooklyn area.
Ira was a member of the Church of the Brethren where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, moderator and many other offices and tasks. He enjoyed gardening and quilting with Kathryn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Rhinehart and Margaret Farden.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn; three daughters and their husbands, Karen and Robert Hensler of Brooklyn; Ruth and Dean Johnston of Montezuma; and Doris and Kerry Hall of Asheboro, North Carolina; one brother, George Henry of Brooklyn; two sisters, Nora, Mrs. Clarence Rhinehart of Brooklyn; and Anna Miller of Marengo; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
