Darlene I. Pickens, 89, of Grinnell, died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, June 27, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Scott Marcum officiating. Pallbearers were Christopher Pinkerton, Tammy Syzmanowski, Jennifer Crawford, Jerry Pickens, Bill Pickens, and Delana Garrett. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Memorials may be designated in her name to the charity of the donor's choice. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.smithfh.com.
Darlene was born the daughter of Bertha Ruth Jones Marcum on Dec. 13, 1922, in Lynnville, and was raised by her mother and her husband Harvey Marcum there.
She was united in marriage with William L. Pickens on March 14, 1942, in Unionville, Mo. They lived in Grinnell, where Darlene was a certified nurse's assistant at St. Francis Hospital and Friendship Manor Care Center.
Darlene was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church. Her enjoyments included family and friends, the beauty of her flowers, and long drives in the country.
Darlene is survived by her children, Loma Pinkerton of Grinnell, Ronald Pickens of Grinnell, Dennis Pickens of Grinnell, and Steven Pickens of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and her brother, Jack Marcum of Grinnell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a grandson.
