Mrs. Mary F. Penfield McDonald

Mrs. Mary F. McDonald, widow of C.C. McDonald was born in Taswell (Tazewell) County, Ill., February 22, 1846, and died a the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.L. Stevens, in Crofton, Neb., December 15, 1911, being 65 years, nine months and 23 days of age.

She was brought here to be laid by her husband, Mr. McDonald, in the cemetery at Ewart.

Mr. and Mrs. McDonald were married in Illinois in 1865 and came to Poweshiek county and settled on a farm near Grinnell in 1867. To this union were born eleven chldren, five of whom preceded her to the better land dying in infancy and early childhood. Six, Mr. W.S., Mr. C.C., and Mr. L.C. McDonald, and Mrs. H.L. Stevens, all of Knox county , Neb., Mrs. Nina Noble, of Wall Lake, Iowa, and Mrs. Dr. J.H. Friend, of this city, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother.

Deceased was a consistent Christian woman being a member of the M.E. church of this city and very zealous in all true Christian work.

Left with a large family of small children by the death of Mr. McDonald in 1882, she bravely endured the hardships necessary to raise such a family at that time and cheerfully bore up under her load having always a kind, cheerful word of comfort and consolation for those about her.
