WILLIAM W. MARTIN

William W. Martin, 93, of Grinnell died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Thursday, Sept. 18, at Smith Funeral Home with John Mountain, pastor of the Church of Christ of Grinnell, officiating. Pianist was Kathleen McCune. Casket bearers were his grandchildren, Larry and Russell Lincoln, Berinda, Larson, Clint William Crawford, Andrew Phipps, Sarah Phipps-Sills, Ryan and Ben Broich, Lori Hemminger, Lisa Lewman, Carrie Martin and Christna DeKoning. Honorary bearers were Clayton Broich, Ron Gruver, George McGilvrey, Doug and Harry See and Larry Steele. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the William Martin Memorial Fund.

He was born April 17, 1910, in Baxter to Charlie Bell and Mabel Alspaugh Martin. He was raised near Baxter and Montezuma where he attended rural schools. He farmed near Montezuma and worked as a salesman for Nash Finch. He later lived in Ottumwa, then moved to Grinnell in 1937, where he owned and operated the OK Rubber Welders Shop.

He was married on May 29, 1948, in Kirksville, Mo., to Marguerite Case and the couple made their home in Grinnell. He was a member of the Church of Christ of Grinnell and enjoyed camping, fishing and church activities.

He is survived by his wife Marguerite Martin of Grinnell; three daughters Harriet Lincoln of Larkspur, Colo., Marla Crawford of Grinnell and Billie Broich of Des Moines; three sons Lee Martin of Kirksville, Mo. and Jerry and Jack Martin, both of Idaho; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister Ila Mae Mills of Ontario, Oregon; and one brother Delmar Martin of Nampa, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents; one great-granddaughter; one brother Lewis Martin and one sister Wilma Meeker.
