RITES SET FOR MRS. SAUNDERS

Carmen E. Saunders, 69, of 228 Broad St., died of cancer at Grinnell General Hospital Friday afternoon.

Funeral services for Mrs. Saunders will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel Ogata, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be at Sheridan Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be left at the Smith Funeral Home.

The daughter of Fred Owen and Kathryn Johnson Playle, she was born Aug. 2, 1907, near Montezuma. She attended schools near the family farm home and later at Bettendorf. When she was 22 years old, she returned to Poweshiek County, making her home in Grinnell.

She was married to Frank E. Saunders on March 1, 1947, at Montezuma. Mrs. Saunders had worked at the former Grinnell Shoe Factory and the Danish Maid.

Survivors include her three step-children, Robert Saunders, of Grinnell, Mrs. Mildred Owens of Redwood City, Calif., and Mrs. Jean Evans of San Bernardino, Calif.; seven step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Playle of Newton and Fred Playle of Seattle, Wash.; and three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Bea) LaGrange of Grinnell, Mrs. Dorothy Norkus of Overland Park, Kan., and Mrs. Irene Whiteis of Roswell, N.M. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1968, and two sisters and two brothers who died in childhood, Leona, Margaret, Owen and Garnet.
