Many Grinnell friends will deeply mourn the sudden death of Rev. Matt S. Hughes, D.D., last Sunday in Cleveland, Ohio, after but two day's illness from pneumonia. He had been on a lecture tour and his sudden death comes as a shock to friends all over the United States.

Matt Hughes was born in West Virginia, and as a young man served an apprenticeship as a reporter on a Wheeling paper. While at this work he felt the call to the ministry and served first pastorates at Blue Point and Madison in this county. He was then transferred to Malcom and after one year there he was appointed to the Grinnell pastorate. Here he was married to a member of the church, *Miss Wheeler.

After a short pastorate here he was visited by a delegation from a large church at Portland, Me., and soon accepted a call to that church. After a few years in Portland he was called to Minneapolis. From there he was called to Kansas City and later to the Church at Pasadena, Calif. It was while at Pasadena that he was elected Bishop and later made his home at Portland, Oregon.

Bishop Hughes was a grand man, a man who knew men, one of the eloquent ministers of the Nation, equally welcome in every walk of life and among all classes of people.

Transcriber Note: Wife was *Harriett Frances Wheeler
