MRS. BEN HUGHES DIES.

Newton (IA) Journal: Mrs. Ben Hughes of Grinnell, died on the parking of the sidewalk a short distance this side of the overhead bridge of the C.R.I. & P. passenger station, Monday evening.

It was shortly after 9:00 o'clock that she was left by a friend, with whom she had visited during the afternoon, at the corner of the Miller boarding house. She was on her way to the depot to take No. 6 for her home in Grinnell.

As she passed down the depot street she was seen by Ves Logsdon, who was outside his home. She would set her bag down and cough, then take it up again. This he saw her do several times, and then she set down on the side of the walk. He went to her and at that time Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Keith arrived on the scene. Before they got to her the sick woman lay down on the grass and moaned and in every way showed she was in great misery.

Mrs. Keith asked her what her name was and she answered Hughes, and said something about her sister being in a hospital. When she inquired if she had had such spells before, the sick woman did not answer, but called for water. When it was brought she could not drink.

An auto came along about this time and a doctor was sent for. Dr. Besser was the first one at her side, but she died as he arrived. Dr. Smith and several other doctors came, including Dr. Hinshaw, the coroner.

The body was taken to the Morgan undertaking parlors.

Her people in Grinnell were informed of her death and they came to Newton and the body was taken to that city on the noon train Thursday.

Mrs. Hughes, who dined at the M.K. Livingston home, did not eat hearty.

Mrs. Livingston and Consuelo Whitmore walked down to the square with her and then on to the crossing past the Miller house. It was about 9:00 o'clock, and Mrs. Livingston offered to go on with her, but Mrs. Hughes said she was not afraid, and they told her goodbye there.

Mrs. Hughes had left her home in Grinnell Monday morning and went to Des Moines expecting to see her sister, Mrs. Bert Hopkins, of this city, in a hospital there; but the sister had been taken to the Grinnell hospital, a change in place having been decided upon.

Not finding the patient in Des Moines, Mrs. Hughes came to Newton on the noon train, and went out to the sister's home, north beyond the C.R.I. & P. freight depot. It was then she found they had taken her to Grinnell.

Mrs. Hughes then went to the M.K. Livingston home, where she visited until time to go to the depot.

Her maiden name was Bicknell and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Randall Bicknell, live in Kellogg, and it is understood they are past eighty years of age.
