DELMAR APPLEBY

Delmar L. Appleby, 84, of Newton, a native of Grinnell, died of heart failure Sunday, April 13, at Heritage Manor Care Center in Newton.

Funeral services and Masonic rites were conducted Wednesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Newton, officiating. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.

The son of Reno B. and Thera Wilson Appleby, he was born Dec. 1, 1912, in Grinnell. He attended Malcom High School.

He was married to Mildred Scoville March 29, 1935, in Newton. She died in 1985. On March 14, 1990, he was married to M. Ruth Hill at Vinton.

Mr. Appleby managed Ross Skelly in Newton for seven years. He retired as a security guard at the Maytag Co.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Larry of Newton, Charlie of Shawnee, Kan., and David of Cherokee, Kan.; one stepson, David Hill of Des Moines; one stepdaughter, Susan Anderson of Newton; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and one brother, Harold "Happ" of Vinton. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.

Memorial contributions may be made to Newton Masonic Lodge No. 59, AM & AF.
