GRINNELL – Funeral services for Guy Cooper Slaven, 81, of Grinnell will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

Mr. Slaven died Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Elder Ron Bryan of the LeGrand Friends Church will conduct services.

Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Veterans Ceremonial Rites will be conducted by the Grinnell American Legion Post No. 53. Fraternal Rites will be conducted by the I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 358.

Survivors include his wife, Anna, of Grinnell; two children, Steve Slaven of Rock Creek Lake and Brenda Slaven of Newton; a step-son, Lee Rolfe of the United States Army and stationed in Germany; two sisters, Thelma Winstead of Arlington, Va., and Helen Clayton of Des Moines; and a brother, Eugene Slaven of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Bernice I. Atwood; a brother, LeRoy Slaven; and a sister, Beulah Olson.

The son of Wolford F. and Flora Edna Smith Slaven, he was born Aug. 14, 1913 near Monticello, Wayne County, Ky. He later moved with his family to Jasper County, near Kellogg, where he attended rural school. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Slaven established Slaven Plumbing and Heating Company in 1945 and operated the business until 1967. He then was employed as a plumber for Grinnell College and retired in 1977.

He was married to Bernice I. Atwood July 15, 1951 at the Pleasant View Church in Jasper County. Following the death of his first wife in 1985, he was married to Anna Talbert Rolfe April 1, 1987.

He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, the Grinnell American Legion Post No. 53, The I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 358 and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register, Fri 10 Feb 1995.
