Eva Dorothy Williams Voelkel was born Sept. 13, 1910, in rural Poweshiek County near Brooklyn, to Thomas and Anne Williams. She had the honor of being the first child of Thomas and Anne to be born in the United States. She worked as a live-in domestic for the Reichart family in Victor in order to attend high school and graduated from Victor High School with the class of 1930. She was united in marriage to Albert F. Voelkel on Feb. 18, 1931 in Grinnell.
Eva lived on a farm nearly all her life and greatly enjoyed rural life. She was most happy working in the garden, at her sewing machine, or with needle and thread or crochet book in her hand. She was a member of the Hartwick Congregational Church and later a member of the Victor Methodist Church. Listening to and singing hymns remained a favorite pastime for her.
Eva is survived by two children: daughter, Beverly (Gerald) Worrall of Evans, Colo.; and son, Robert (Karen) Voelkel of Eldridge; six grandchildren, Michael Worrall of Centerville, Utah, Brenda (Shinji) Nishimura of Ogaki, Japan, Kristin Pettit of Mexico, Mo., Jana (John) Murray of Wheatland, Scott (Donna) Voelkel of Seoul, Korea, and Lynn Ramsay of Delmar; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd (Linda) Williams of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sisters, Sylvia Van Ersvelde of Brooklyn, and Irma Boatman of Lindale, Texas.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers George, Richard, Robert, and two infant brothers, Noel and Alfred; and sisters Oatley Martin and Elsie Martin.
