GEORGE CASTORE

Dr. George Castore, a clinical psychologist formerly associated with the Poweshiek County Mental Health Center, died Friday, April 13, in Charlottesville, Va., at the age of 78.

The family has established a memorial scholarship fund for graduate psychology students at Loras College.

Dr. Castore received the first Ph.D. in clinical psychology conferred by Penn State University and became a recognized authority on group methodologies. At the time of his death, he was on the faculty of the University of Virginia Medical School where he was teaching his methods to psychiatric residents and graduate clinical psychology students.

Dr. Castore joined the staff of the Poweshiek County Mental Health Center in 1970. Much of his practice in Grinnell was with college students. He also developed an interpersonal relationships group program for Grinnell Junior High School students.

He retired in 1978 and left Grinnell for Dubuque. In Dubuque he was asked to join the Loras faculty to start a graduate psychology program.

He is survived by four children, Carl of West Lafayette, Ind., Glenn of Minneapolis, Minn., Janet Murphy of Brown Deer, Wis., and Carolyn Castore, also of Minneapolis; and eight grandchildren.

His marriage to Jean Parker Castore ended in divorce.
