CLYDE LAUGHTER

Clyde Laughter, 78, Madison, Wis., died Sunday, March 22, at his home of cancer.

Services were held Thursday, March 26, at Cress Funeral Home in Madison. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials maybe made to the American Cancer Society, Multiple Sclerosis Association or hospice.

He was born Sept. 24, 1913, in Love, Miss. He attended Synodovel College, Ohio State University and graduated from the University of Alabama. He received a graduate degree in engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.

He was married to Doris Kennedy March 9, 1947, in Grinnell. He worked in construction and engineering including for Municipal Construction, Nashville, Tenn.; the Federal Highway Administration, Washington, D.C.; the University of Delaware and the Missouri Highway Department, Jefferson City, Mo. Since 1964 he had been chief soil engineer for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

He served in the United States Army in World War II and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the First United Methodist Church of Madison, Scottish Rite Bodies, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society for Testing Materials, Transportation Research Board, Grand Cross of Colors-Rainbows and had held offices in professional societies and published professional papers.

He is survived by two daughters Caroline Laughter and Martha Lippitt, both of Madison; his mother-in-law Elsie Kennedy, Grinnell, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 1988.
