ANTONIA MARIE WHITE

Antonia Marie White, 97, of Grinnell died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at St. Francis Manor.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Friday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. William Reynolds, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Joseph H. Determan OP of San Antonio, Texas, officiating. Music will be provided by Marilyn Kriegel and the St. Mary's Church Choir. Interment will be in the Calvary section of Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Foundation. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home beginning at 12 noon on Thursday with family members present from 6 to 8 p.m. A Scripture Service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

She was born Nov. 22, 1908, in Haverhill to Bernard and Mary Ann Stalzer Determan. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. She was married on Jan. 8, 1929, to Raymond G. White at Immaculate Conception Church in Haverhill. They farmed near Haverhill, Melbourne and Rhoades before moving to a farm in the Rock Creek Lake area near Grinnell in 1940. She assisted her husband with farm duties and was a mother and homemaker. In 1980 the family moved into Grinnell to make their home on Marvin Avenue.

She was a member of t. Mary's Catholic Church, the former St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society, Victor Grange and the UGolGo Club. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, needlework and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

She is survived by her children, Mary Ellen White of Grinnell, Ruth Ann Butler of Derwood, Md., Clair B. White of Wichita Falls, Texas, Edward J. White of Nashville, Tenn., David H. White of Waterloo, Louis P. White of Graylake, Ill., Mark R. White of Des Moines, Luke White of Grinnell and Steven M. White and Matthew J. White, both of Maysville, Iowa; 28 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; one brother, the Rev. Joseph Determan and one sister Freida Cormicle. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sons, Willis Charles and John Joseph White; three grandchildren; three bothers, John, Hugh and Paul Determan and two sisters, Alma Gochee and Helen Potter.
