EDWARD HUGHES RITES TUESDAY

Edward (Ed) Hughes, 78, of 709 Elm St., Grinnell, died Friday afternoon, March 2, at his home.

The Scripture Service and Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harry Linnenbrink officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers will be Robert Henderson, Floyd Lacina, Gerald R. Schmidt, Bernard Schmitz, Leo R. Schmitz, and Larry Wilson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Diers, John Hotchkin, Mike Hotchkin, Richard Sanders, Kenneth L. Saunders, Ned VandeStouwe and John Winchell.

Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of William and Anna Garland Hughes, he was born in Grinnell Dec. 9, 1905. He was raised in Boone where he attended Sacred Heart School.

He later returned to Grinnell and joined his father and uncle in the Hughes Construction Co. in 1926. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Newton, The B.P.O. Elks Lodge in Grinnell, the Grinnell Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, *Dorothy; two daughters, Karen Greiner of Mathis, Texas, and Linda Stoaks of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Schofield of Downer's Grove, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild; five sisters, Katherine Bradley, Beatrice Landis, Dorothy Wolcott, Frances McMahon and Nannette Temple and one brother, James Hughes.
