ROBERT J.H. "DOC" BADGER

Funeral services were held for Robert J.H. "Doc" Badger, 98, of Wesley Acres, Des Moines, IA on Friday, Dec. 8, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Montezuma. Rev. H. Burr Bryant officiated at the service. Jason Badger, soloist and Tom Sandholm, pianist performed "Amazing Grace: and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow." The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art" accompanied by Miss Alice Underwood. A Masonic service was held by members of Lafayette Lodge No. 52 A.F. & A.M. and an Eastern Star Service by members of Lafayette Chapter No. 232 O.E.S. Interment was in the Masonic-IOOF Cemetery, Montezuma.

Casket bearers were Alec Badger, Steve Lovick, Pherel Linn, Jason Badger, David Linn and Ron Linn. Honorary casket bearers were Frank Wheeler, Gayle Creswell, Sylvan VeVerka, Waldo Vannoy, Chris Wray, Danny Carroll, Loel Ferguson and Phil Evans.

Robert J.H. "Doc" Badger died Monday, Dec. 4 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born January 29, 1902 at Murray, IA, the son of Wilburt and Estella (Westhafer) Badger. He graduated from Murray High School and received his Bachelor degree from the University of Iowa. He began teaching at Washington, IA then Hartwick and Thornburg before coming to Montezuma in 1927. He taught shop and science before becoming an administrator and principal. In 1966 he received his masters degree from the University of Iowa.

On Nov. 27, 1939 he was united in marriage with Mildred Trimble at Montezuma. To this union two sons and two daughters were born. he was an active member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church where he taught Adult Sunday School and was a Lay Speaker. He also attended the Iowa Annual Conference of the Methodist Church. He was a member of the Montezuma Lions Club and was a Past District Governor. He also received the Lions' Jones Fellow Award. He was active with the Gideons and rarely missed a camp meeting. A Mason, he was a member of the Lafayette Lodge No. 52 A.F. & A.M. He was also a member of the Lafayette Chapter No. 232 Order of Eastern Star. Doc served on the board of the Girls High School Athletic Union for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mildred on June 7, 1984; one son, Roy Clarence; a grandson; a sister, Opal Wood; and two brothers, Wilbert and Cecil.

Doc is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Juanita and Ardie Lovick of Washington, IA and Roberta and Roger Linn of Correctionville, IA; one son and his wife John and Cindia Badger of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to Badger-Trimble Scholarship at Montezuma Community High School or the United Methodist church.
