BERTHA F. VANDERBURGH, 89

Bertha Vanderburgh, 89, of Grinnell, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2006, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center.

Her memorial service was held Friday morning, March 31, at the Carman Center in the Mayflower Home. Inurnment was at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, New York. Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell was in charge of the arrangements.

Bertha was born the daughter of Roy and Una (Turney) Tarvin at Barnes City on Dec. 24, 1916. She graduated from Montezuma High School with the Class of 1935. On Nov. 25, 1937, she united in marriage to George Schlegle Vanderburgh in Dutchess County, N.Y. The couple both had careers with IBM in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Her husband, George, passed away on Nov. 27, 1971.

After her retirement in 1977, she was very active in bird-watching groups, cross-country skiing, and mountain-climbing. She was a member of the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club. She also did extensive traveling within the United States as well as foreign countries.

In 1986, she moved back to Iowa to the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell where she remained very active until she suffered a broken hip.

Bertha is survived by her sister, Marjorie Little (and Floyd) of Montezuma; her two sisters-in-law, Margaret Tarvin of Grinnell and Ruth Tarvin of Englewood, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her five brothers, Everett, Cleo, Floyd, Clark and Raymond; and her two sisters, Lois Tarvin and Lodi Slagle.
