Although suffering from cancer with little hope of recovery, Skip Purdum maintained a cheerful smile through his suffering to the last, making it as easy as possible for his loved ones, Rev. Mr. Kerr, pastor of his church at Ottumwa, informed sorrowing relatives and friends who filled First Christian church Thursday.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. July 18. Miss Alice Underwood played the musical selections and accompanied Suzanne Trinkle and Betty Acord as they sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Interment was in Jackson township cemetery under dirction of the Steffy Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Max Exline, Forest and Carl Adams, Ray, Lavern and Lazell Vandeventer.

Carroll Cliff Purdum, better known to his many friends as "Skip," was born in Montezuma, Dec. 20, 1921, the son of Ben and Pearl Farnsworth Purdum, and died at Veterans hospital, Iowa City, July 14, where he had been a patient since Mar. 2, at the age of 41 years, 6 months and 24 days.

He was graduated from Montezuma high school in 1942, after which he joined the armed forces and served as an Army medical technician over seas.

Feb. 24, 1943 he was united in marriage to Helen Violet Simpson, and to this union were born two sons, Mack and Duane.

He was a loving husband and father, also very much dedicated to the relief of (and the rest of this paragraph is missing...)
