HELEN V. WILLETT, 86

Helen V. Willett, age 86, of Brooklyn, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at the Grinnell Regional Hospital, Grinnell. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, with the Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial was in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be contributed to the East Poweshiek County Ambulance.

Helen is survived by her husband of 45 years, Robert Willett; a son, Mack Purdum, and wife, Mary, of Montezuma; and a grandddaughter, Michelle Bartachek.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Skip Purdum, in 1963; a son, Duane Purdum, in 2001; and four brothers, Claire, Chester, Lloyd and Bob Simpson.

Helen Violet Simpson was born Sept. 19, 1924, in rural Montezuma, the daughter of George and Alice Morrow Simpson. She graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1942. Helen married Robert Willett on June 19, 1965, at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. She was employed over the years at the Ben Franklin Store, the Jack Warfel Men's Store, and also worked at Crosson Drug Store, retiring after 20 years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the BBB Club, and a former member of Eastern Star. Helen enjoyed crocheting, reading and playing cards. She especially enjoyed the beautiful flowers in her flower garden.
