GRACE SHOEMAKER

Grace Shoemaker, 99, of Ames, formerly of Grinnell, died Monday, July 25, at Grand Avenue Care Center in Ames.

Graveside services were conducted Thursday at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg, with the Rev. Richard Fleming officiating.

The daughter of Alvin and Martha J. Slagle Cooper, she was born Dec. 19, 1894, in Mount Pisgah, Ky. She was married to Alva Bates in August 1915 in Monticello, Ky., and he preceded her in death. She was married to Dwight Shoemaker in 1957, and he also preceded her in death.

She was a resident of Grinnell form 1957 to 1982 and had lived in Ames for the past 12 years.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn Bates of Knoxville and Ralph Bates of Newton; one daughter, Helen Allen of Ames; two brothers, Everett Cooper of Grinnell and Alvin Cooper Jr. of Kellogg; three sisters, Opal Smith of Grinnell and Rosalie Leavelle and Juanita Kono, both of California; 10 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; one son, Robert Bates; and seven brothers and sisters.
