KATHERINE E. YOUNT

Mrs. Katherine E. Yount, 89, of Brooklyn, died Friday night, Jan. 19, 2001, in Brookhaven Nursing Home, Brooklyn.

Funeral services for Mrs. Yount were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Bill Korns, Pastor of the Church of the Brethren, Rev. Ronald Van Heukelom, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and Charles Nelson, officiated.

The organist was Marilyn Kriegel and the soloist was Chip Bennett. Special selections were "Good Morning and Good Night" and "In the Garden." Flower attendants were Bob and Janet Ryan and Willis and Delores Montgomery. Honorary casket-bearers were Daryl Goodlow, John Griffin, Jerry Roshek and Ed Gross. Casket-bearers were Steve Kies, Charles Nelson, Martin Pearson, Philip Pearson, Lyle Bauman Jr. and Ray Frimml. Interment was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery.

Katherine Elizabeth Gross Yount, daughter of Clifford Wilson Gross and Emma Alwilda Dunton Gross, was born March 19, 1911, near Brooklyn, Ia.

Mrs. Yount received her education in a rural school and the Brooklyn High School, graduating in 1927. She then taught in rural schools.

On July 28, 1930, Katherine was married to Fred Austin Yount in Brooklyn. They farmed near Hartwick for 24 years, moving to Brooklyn in 1954. She then worked for Poweshiek County ASCA until 1973. From 1973 to 1980, Mrs. Yount was a bookkeeper for Brooklyn 80 AMOCO.

Mrs. Young was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Columbia Club, BBB, and Tri-C's. She was a treasurer at the church for many years.

Katherine was a member and lifetime achiever in 4-H. She was state secretary, leader and county chairman and a member of the Poweshiek County Hall of Fame.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband who died May 6, 1994; a son Bruce Alan; and a brother, Kenneth Gross.

Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Kies of Brooklyn; two sons and their wives, Philip and Donna Yount of Tigard, Ore. and Clifford Duane and Darla Yount of Dania, Fla.; 9 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.
