A SUGAR CREEK PIONEER
---------------------------------------
James W. Fudge Passes Away at the
Ripe Old Age of Eighty-four
years.

James Warren Fudge was born in Abingdon, Va., April 26th, 1839, and departed this life July 8, 1923, at the home of his son, W.T. Fudge, aged 84 years, 2 months and 11 days. He was the son of Jacob and Rebecca Fudge.

The family moved from Virginia when James was about 5 years old and settled on a farm near Monroe, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. They were among the early settlers of Jasper county, settling there in 1844. They knew what pioneering in a new country meant.

At the beginning of the Civil war he enlisted in Company E of the 23rd Iowa, and served till the close of the war. He was honorably discharged in 1865, and when he came home the Rock Island railroad was finished only as far as Grinnell.

On March 20th, 1866, he was united in marriage to Ann Highland who preceded him to the Great Beyond nearly five years ago.

They lived for nearly two years in Madison county, Iowa, but in November, 1868, they moved to the farm which has been his home for 55 years.

To this union was born four children, Mrs. J.P Baker of Searsboro, John R. of Ree Heights, South Dakota, Lulie E. Robertson of Havelock, Nebraska, and W.T., of Searsboro.

He was the last of a family of five children.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday forenoon at 10:30, conducted by Rev. Mr. Loose of the M.E. church of New Sharon, who spoke from the text, Psalms 46-1: "God is our refuse and strength, an ever present help in trouble."

"The Home of the Soul," "Rock of Ages," and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" were rendered by a choir composed of Mr. and Mrs. S.C. McDowell, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Roberts, Mrs. A.B. and Mrs. H.R. Latham.

Burial was made in the New Sharon cemetery beside his wife, there to await the final Resurrection when all they that are in their graves shall hear the voice of God and come forth.

He leaves beside his four children 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father.

Those present at the funeral from a distance were Mr. John Highland and Mrs. Mortimore of Linden, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Woody of Reasoner.
