DISCIPLE OF
BEAUTY PASSES

Otto Schneckenburger, artist soul in a frail body, crossed the river Monday morning at 8 o'clock into the land of perpetual music. He had been ailing for two weeks.

In his passing, Grinnell loses a distinctive figure. No one who saw the bent little body, would realize the beauty of the spirit which it housed. Otto Schneckenburger was a gardener. He satisfied his love of beauty by seeing things grow beautifully, but first and above all he was a musician.

He came of a musical family. His ancestors across the sea were high in the musical world. It was a near relative who wrote the words of the great German National Song, "Die Wacht am Rhein." Otto himself in his youth was a musician. He was born in a German colony in Russia but in his young manhood came to seek his fortune in the new world.

For ten years he lived in Davenport; for ten years in Burlington, and then in 1899, twenty-seven years ago, he came to Grinnell to make his home. Month after month, and year after year he has gone in and out among us. Nearly every one knew him and most of them will recall frequent references in the Herald to his love of music and his almost constant attendance, fifteen to twenty-five years ago, upon recitals at the college, and other musical entertainments in Grinnell. The love of beauty dwelt within him and even in later years when some great artist was in town or some notable musical event was in progress, the eager little figure of Otto Schneckenburger might be seen with ears drinking in the harmonies which to him were as those in heaven.

Otto Schneckenburger was aged 77 years, 4 months and 18 days. He passed quietly away at his little home at 311 Main street. He is survived by his faithful wife, Mrs. Mary Schneckenburger.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at three o'clock from the Congregational church by Rev. E.M. Vittum.

Professor Elias Blum will be at the organ, the Grinnell String quartet will play and a quartet will sing some of Mr. Schneckenburger's favorite hymns.
