DAWSON BRANDE DIES
------------------
FUNERAL HERE
ON WEDNESDAY

Former Resident Victim
of Heart Attack.

Sad news came to Grinnell when a telegram was received announcing the death Sunday morning of Dawson Brande in a hospital in Minneapolis after an illness of a week from heart trouble, from which he had been suffering for some time. He was 50 years old.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Baptist church of which Dawson's grandfather was a pioneer pastor and to which he and his father, the late E.B. Brande, had given unfailing and loyal support. Burial will be in the family mausoleum in Hazelwood cemetery.

PIONEER FAMILY

Dawson was the last of a family which for many years played an active and helpful part in the life of Grinnell. His grandfather, Rev. T. Brande, and his wife were positive influences for good during a life of many years in this community, and his father, genial, musical, capable Eddie Brande, good business man, good fellow and good citizen, was a constructive force during his many years here. Eddie Brande's memory still remains in Grinnell as a tradition of good fellowship and whole-hearted friendliness.

These qualities he transmitted to his son Dawson, who was born and grew up in Grinnell. In his early manhood he spent some time on the west coast and then, returning to Grinnell, he started an insurance business. When C.A. Smith, Grinnell real estate and insurance man, moved to California in 1921, Dawson purchased his interest in the firm of Smith & Black, under the firm name of Brande & Black.

LEFT IN 1923

In 1923 the firm's business was purchased by Mehlin & Clindinin and shortly after Dawson moved to Minneapolis, where he was associated with his father in the management of B.J. Carney & Co., a firm which did and still does a large business in cedar poles. Following his father's death Dawson became one of the main executives of the company, which has continued to prosper under his management.

Since 1923, the Brande family has been absent from Grinnell, but their interest in Grinnell has continued unabated. The Baptist church has been the constant recipient of large gifts from both Dawson and his father, who thus said filial tribute to the stalwart minister who was their ancestor. The flag pole in Central Park was a gift of the Brandes and the substantial check which Dawson sent last summer to help along the Arbor Lake project is still fresh in memory.

GRINNELLIAN AT HEART

Almost any worthy project in Grinnell during the years has been assured in advance of Brande support. It really seems in spite of the fact that Dawson lived in Minneapolis, that a Grinnell man has passed away, because at heart he was a Grinnell man, no matter where he lived.

Dawson is survived by his wife, who was in Grinnell only a few weeks ago visiting her many friends in the community to which she came as a bride. Sincere sympathy goes out to her in her great sorrow.
