ROBERT LEE DEWITTE

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, at Smith Funeral Home in Victor, for Robert Lee DeWitte, 65, who died at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City on Feb. 22, 1998.

Pastor Larry Osweiler of the Church of the Nazarene in Marengo officiated. Pallbearers were Ernie Claypool. Ronnie Claypool, J.D. Hoedt, Daryl Goodlow, Toney Pulkrabek, and Donny Vine. Jeff DeWitte was an honorary bearer. Military rites were performed by members of the Brooklyn American Legion, with interment in Harmony Cemetery, rural Poweshiek County.

The son of Oscar and Mary Himshoot (Himschoot) DeWitte, Robert was born June 2, 1932, in Brooklyn. He was raised in Brooklyn and was a 1950 graduate of Brooklyn High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Bob was married to Martha L. Claypool March 2, 1957, in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived in Victor prior to moving to a farm southeast of Brooklyn in 1958. Bob farmed all of his adult life and retired in 1997. He enjoyed raising Holstein cattle and held a passion for old tractors. He was a member and past commander of the Brooklyn American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald DeWitte; and one sister, Betty Barnholdt.

He is survived by his wife, Martha, of Brooklyn; three children, Laurie Lee Pulkrabek of Mahomet, Ill., Jeffrey Lee DeWitte of Brooklyn, and Linda Marie DeHoedt of Lynnville; seven grandchildren, Allison, Nicolas, Tyler, Abbie, Spencer, Randa and Garrett; one sister, Lorraine Martello of Las Vegas; and one brother, Bernard DeWitte of Cedar Rapids.
