DIED.

PROFESSOR J. FRED SMITH.

Professor J. Fred Smith, for ten years principal of the Iowa College Academy, an educator of ability and a gentleman in the best meaning of the term, died in a hospital in Santa Cruz, California, on July 13, following an operation for gall stones. Professor Smith was taken ill while absent from his home in Campbell, California on a camping trip with George Marsh, Grinnell, '98.

Professor Smith is well remembered here. He came to Grinnell in the fall of 1890 and closed his connection with the college in the spring of 1899. His devoted service had much to do with the upbuilding of the college and his service was of a nature to be remembered with gratitude.

Since leaving Grinnell, Professor Smith had been principal of a flourishing academy at Campbell, where he has given the same devoted service which made him so valuable a man for Grinnell.

His wide circle of friends here will learn of his death with deep regret.

A wife and six children survive him.
