LUCETTA JANE MCDONALD

Lucetta Jane Willard was born August 10, 1891, at North Hero in Grand Isle county, Vermont, and died at Grinnell, Iowa, May 31, 1902. She was united in marriage to Wm. McDonald March 2, 1839, at Rock Island, Ill. She came of a family of patriots, her grandfather, John Trask, serving as first lieutenant, fought bravely at Ticonderoga, her father, Daniel Willard was a soldier in the war of 1812. Her love of country being thus inspired by her ancestors gave her the courage to give to the cause of her country in the civil war, a husband and four sons, the former dying at Louisville, Ky. from exposure at the battle of Murfreesboro in 1863.

She leaves to mourn her loss one brother, A.J. Willard of Rapid City, Ill., four sons and three daughters, Frank McDonald of Minden, Neb., W.W. McDonald of Hastings, Neb., W.P McDonald of Excelsior, Minn., Mrs. Wm. DeVinney of Grinnell, Iowa, Mrs. Edgar Phillip of Ayre, Neb., Mrs. J.F. Wilson of Grinnell, Iowa, and M.W. McDonald of Clear Lake, Utah, one son, C.C. McDonald having passed on before.

Her life was full of labor and love, one of the mothers whose home was of more worth than fame or wealth. Wholly unselfish, she gave the labor of her hands for others to enjoy. She was a christian and a member of the M.E. church for nearly forty years. Death has no victory and the grave no sting.

The funeral was conducted from the M.E. church by the Rev. W.G. Wilson assisted by the Rev. W.P Stoddard on Tuesday afternoon, and her remains laid at rest in Hazelwood cemetery.
