RITES HELD FOR
MR. THORNTON

LaVoy Thornton, 66, of Marengo died early Monday morning, Aug. 26, after an illness of several months.

The son of Ora and Stella McNair Thornton, he was born May 21, 1908, at Van Meter. While he was young, his family moved to Wellman and later to Marengo. He attended school in Marengo, graduating form high school in 1929.

Mr. Thornton worked at the Strand Theater for many years, and when the theater was closed he worked for the Amana Woolen Mills. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a member of the American Legion since 1945.

He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Clark (Faye) Brink of Grinnell, and was preceded in death by his mother in 1950 and his father in 1967.

Funeral services for Mr. Thornton were held Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Hoover-Valentine Funeral Home in Marengo, with burial Thursday in the Thornton Cemetery, Van Meter. Military services were conducted by the Van Meter American Legion Post.
