Janet Opal Roberts, 68, of rural Montezuma died at her home on Saturday, April 15, 2006.

Her funeral service was Wednesday, April 19, at Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma with Pastor Boyd Sparks officiating. Interment was at Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma. Watts Funeral Home of Montezuma was in charge of the arrangements.

Casket bearers were Jeremy Chedester, Jim Chedester, Lori Chedester, Deena Chedester, Jon Roberts, Jenifer Roberts, Marvin Hicks and Roger Mahoney.

Janet was born May 29, 1937 in Poweshiek County, the daughter of Harold and Helen (Hicks) Byers. She graduated from Montezuma High School in 1954. She then graduated from Simpson College in 1958. She was united in marriage with Jerry Roberts on June 15, 1958 at the Methodist Church in Montezuma. They had lived in Marshalltown before moving to Florida. She received her Masters Degree in Library Science at the University of South Florida. She was a reference librarian. She also taught piano lessons. She enjoyed bird watching, playing bridge, reading and her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Florida Library Association and the American Library Association.

Janet is survived by her husband, Jerry, a daughter, Lori (Jim) Chedester of Laurel, and a son, Jon, of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Jeremy Chedester, Deena Chedester and Jennifer Roberts, and one sister, Joyce Byers of Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Michael, in 1974.
