EARL EMMERT

The son of Andrew and Lela Drew Emmert, Earl was born May 18, 1900 in Newburg. He attended rural school near his home. Following his education he worked with his father and brothers in the construction business where they built bridges and schools.

He was married to Jessie Smith Jan. 24, 1942 in Lancaster, Mo. The couple farmed in Sheridan Township for many years before retiring in 1977 and moving to Grinnell. He served with the United States Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge No. 1266, the Grinnell American Legion Post No. 53, the Tama Eagles Lodge, and the Poweshiek County Farm Bureau.

Earl loved the farm, being outdoors and working the land and observing nature. He enjoyed visiting with his friends and playing cards and bingo at the Elks Lodge and American Legion. But, his pride and joy was his grandson, Chad.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie of Grinnell; his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Richard Eisele of Grinnell; his grandson, Chad of Grinnell; and several nieces and nephews.

Earl died May 3, at Grinnell Hospital at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Theodore, Lee, Everett, and Lowell Emmert; and his sister, Dorothy Baker.

Funeral services were May 11 at Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, officiated by the Rev. Daniel I. Ogata, First Presbyterian Church, Malcom.

Music was provided by Alice Renaud, organist, who played "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace."

Pallbearers were Ronald Parker, Dale Emmert, Dick Emmert, Willard Emmert, Arthur Iverson, Rick Peters, and Roger Peters.

Honorary bearers were Eugene Campbell, John Higdon, Duke McCurry, Melvin Stoker, Paul Stone, and Jerry Youngbeck. Fraternal rites were by the members of the Grinnell Elks Lodge No. 1266. Interment was at Sheridan Cemetery.
