TRIBUTES ARE
RENDERED TO
DR. GEO. E. WHITE

"Dr. George E. White was an American Knight of the Holy Grail" said Dr. J.S. Nollen at the memorial service in honor of Grinnell's distinguished alumnus held in Herrick Chapel Wednesday afternoon. Dr. White passed away recently in Claremont, Calif., at the advanced age of 84 years and his ashes had burial. His daughter, Mrs. Temple Burling of Providence, R.I., and Rev. and Mrs. J.P. Burling of Des Moines, parents of her husband, attended the exercises.

In his tribute to this distinguished missionary and educator, Dr. Nollen said that if the honor of sainthood were bestowed by the Protestant church, it might well be granted to Dr. White because of the purity of his life, the sweetness of his spirit, the singleness of his devotion, and the signal accpmplishments which he attained, including the breathing of life into a dead college, his beloved Anatolia, to which he devoted so much of his life.

"He was a true Grinnellian," said Dr. Nollen, "enshrined in whose career were the high traditions and ideals for which his college has stood since its founding."

Dr. Nollen sketched the career of Dr. White starting with his boyhood in Chester township, through his college days to his graduation with the Cyclone class of 1882 and on through the happy and fruitful years of his service as president of Anatolia college at Marsovan, Turkey and later in Saloniki, Greece.

President S.N. Stevens of Grinnell college closed the services with prayer.

Elbert Smith at the organ played as a prelude the Largo from Dvorak's New World Symphony and as a postlude the March from "Saul" by Handel. The vesper choir sang two favorite hymns, "For all the Saints who from their labors rest" and "Lead On, Oh King Eternal" and the beautiful Kyrie from Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass.

Ross V. Coutts, John C. Manly and Pete Staffanou served as honorary pall bearers.

Brief interment services were held in Hazelwood cemetery.
