RITES CONDUCTED

Funeral services were held at 2:00 this afternoon (Monday, Aug. 23) at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home for A. Judson Blakely, 80, of 121 East St., who died Friday, Aug 20 at Grinnell General Hospital shortly after admission.

The Rev. Newell E. Davis, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational officiated at the services. Organist was Kathleen Heffner.

Pallbearers were LaForest Sherman, Hugh McCleery, Donald Hasselbrink, Pierce Comerford, Mac Molison and Guilford Moore. Honorary pallbearers were Morey Pilgrim, Tom Moore, F.A. Jones, Leonard Evans, George German and Howard Hyde.

Masonic graveside services were conducted by Hermon Lodge No,. 273, A.F. & A.M.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of A. Judson and Elizabeth Sulser Blakely, Mr. Blakely was born on Aug. 2, 1891 at Grinnell. He received his education in the Grinnell schools, graduating from Grinnell high school. He attended Grinnell College for two years.

He married Sarah McCool on Sept. 17, 1913 at Davenport, and following their marriage the couple farmed south of Grinnell for a number of years. They moved to Grinnell 20 years ago.

Mr. Blakely was elected Master Farmer in 1927, the youngest farmer to receive this honor. He was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, the Masonic Lodge of Grinnell, a past member of the Kiwanis Club, a charter member of the Farm Bureau, a 4-H club leader for many years, a member of the Iowa Wool Growers Association and served on the Board of Directors of the Grinnell State Bank.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah; two daughters -- Mrs. William (Virginia) Lindsay of Aston, Pa., and Mrs. Gerald (Harriet) German of New Sharon; his son -- Robert Blakely of McAllen, Texas; 16 grandchildren and one sister -- Miss Margaret Blakely of Des Moines. Mr. Blakely was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren; and three sisters -- Mary and Esther, who passed away in infancy, and Helen, who passed away in June, 1971.

A memorial in Mr. Blakely's name has been established for the new East Intensive Care Unit at Grinnell General Hospital.
