C.J. Hesson died Saturday morning at 6:30 o'clock at his home in Newburg, after a protracted illness. Friday's Herald announced that his condition was critical and the end was not long delayed. Mr. Hesson had been in serious condition for a long time.

Charles J. Hesson was born in Carroll County, Maryland, March 14th, 1874, and died at this home in Newburg, Iowa, on July 25, 1925, after a long continued sickness.

With his parents he came to Iowa and settled in Muscatine county in 1880. For fifteen years this continued to be the family home when he came to Gilman, and entered into business life there.

January 17th, 1907, he was united in marriage to Effie J. Ohl and the same year they came to Newburg, where he began a business career that continued till sickness compelled him to retire from all labor. During this period of almost eighteen years he had interested himself with everything that was put forward for the welfare of Newburg and the entire community. He had the vision of a pioneer and the progressive spirit that inspired his fellow men, and unselfishly he gave himself to the building up of a progressive community life.

He had long been a member of the Newburg Consolidated school board and was at the time of his death. He had a great ambition that Newburg school should be second to none. His work along educational lines led to more extended fields and at the time of his death he was serving on the Jasper County Board of Education.

He was kind and consistent to his fellow men and if he could not agree with their views he was still a sincere and trusted friend. He was a friendly man and his friends were all those who came to know him.

Among those who remain to mourn their loss are his wife and daughter, his mother and sister, Mrs. Hughes, of Newton, and four brothers, Harry of Milltown, Wis., W.O. Hesson, Glenn and Elzie, all of Newton.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Grinnell, also the Elks of the same place and an active member of the K. of P. Lodge for many years.

The funeral services were held at the Newburg Congregational church conducted by Rev. H.L. Wissler of Chester Center, assisted by Rev. Mr. Smith and Rev. Mr. Cox, of Newburg. Interment was made at Gilman. The Masonic Lodge of Grinnell had charge of the burial service.
