MRS. RACHEL ADKINS
CLOSES LONG LIFE
------------------

Venerable Woman Died March 31,
Aged 99 Years.
------------------

Rachel Williams was born in Wayne Co., Kentucky November 11, 1824 and departed from this life March 31, 1924 at the age 99 years, four months and twenty days. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keelan Williams and was one of a family of seven daughters all of whom preceded her in death. Her mother died when she was quite young and her father remarried to which union two daughters were born.

She was united in marriage to Benjamin Adkins about the year of 1853. Nine children came to bless their home, five of whom are still living, J.F. Adkins, and Mrs. G.W. Cooper of Grinnell; L.B. Adkins of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Mrs. C.W. Spurling of Newton, Mrs. Mary Alice Adkins of Pasadena, California. The deceased are Mrs. Jane Cooper, Wyatt Adkins, M.C. Adkins and General Adkins who died in infancy.

Early in life Mrs. Adkins united with the Baptist church giving many years of service and having been a member of nearly seventy years. She was one of the early pioneers of Jasper county. She came to Iowa with her family a few years after marriage and has lived in the vicinity of Kellogg and Grinnell for the past sixty years. She was a faithful and loving wife and mother and leaves many friends and relatives to mourn her loss. Her life has been one of long and active service and she has enjoyed good health until the past few weeks when her usual vigor failed and she succumbed to the light attack of pneumonia. Her passing came as a blessing to her and she has longed for her last rest during the past few years when the infirmities of old age caused her life to be a burden to herself.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Methodist church at Kellogg. She was laid to rest in Antle Cemetery beside her husband who preceded her in death about thirty years ago. Pall bearers were six of her grand-children.
