Julius D. Calkins was born in Grinnell, Iowa Oct. 27, 1895, and met his untimely and accidental death Friday evening, September 26, 1919, aged 23 years, 10 months and 30 days.

On the eighteenth day of March, 1919, he was united in marriage to Miss Gladys Newton of Brooklyn. Their happy wedded life was made up of but six brief months. Mr. Calkins grew to manhood in Grinnell, Iowa, and for the last three years has been employed as a brakeman on the Rock Island railroad. He was an honest and upright young man and very thoughtful and kind to his widowed mother, who was making her home with the young couple in Des Moines.

He is survived by the young wife, one brother, Thomas, of Chicago, Ill., the mother, Mrs. L. E. Calkins, of Des Moines, Iowa, also an aunt, Mrs. A. B. Stowe, of Grinnell, Iowa, who with her seven daughters, was present at the funeral service to express loving sympathy to those near and dear by the ties of nature.

The funeral service was held at the Newton home in Brooklyn, Sabbath afternoon. Interment in the Grinnell cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. John W. Pool, of the Methodist church in Brooklyn, Iowa.
