William Hankey was born in Germany, Oct. 22nd, 1842, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fannie B. Heath in Bellview, Fla. July 6th, 1928, aged 85 years, 8 months and 18 days.

At the age of six years, he came to the United States with his parents, the family settling in Wisconsin.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry and served until the cessation of hostilities.

In 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Elmira Eaton. The new home was made at Bronxville, Minn. To them was born five children. Two, Harry and Jennie, died in infancy. The others, W. E. Hankey, of Davenport, E. D. Hankey of Kansas City and Mrs. Fannie B. Heath of Belleview, Fla. survive.

In 1873 the family moved to Brooklyn, where for 24 years, Mr. Hankey was engaged in the mercantile business. In 1897 they moved to Chicago and later to Minnesota, where Mrs. Hankey departed this life in 1916. The funeral was conducted from the Methodist church on Easter Sunday. Since that time Mr. Hankey has made his home with his children.

During the time of his residence in Brooklyn, Mr. Hankey was a member of and one of the leading workers in the Episcopal Church.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge and for a number of years held office in the local organization.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal Church, Thursday, July 12th, at 2:00 p.m. Interment was in the Brooklyn cemetery. The local Masonic Lodge had charge of services in the cemetery.

The pallbearers were F. L. Neff, Joe Karr, Ed Breniman, John Corrough, Ira Thompson, and R. J. Breckenridge.
