ON SATURDAY

Retired Jeweler Was
Prominent Businessman
For Nearly 50 Years

Frank M. Bartling, 77, a prominent Grinnell businessman for nearly a half century, died Saturday night at a local hospital where he had been confined for about a week.

Bartling owned and operated Bartling's Jewelry Store on Fourth Avenue, at the site now occupied by Joseph's Jewelry, for some 48 years before his retirement in 1953.

FUNERAL SERVICES TODAY

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. today (Monday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. L.V. Kuebrich of St. Mary's church officiating. Burial was in Calvary cemetery.

Pallbearers were L.W. Brock, Carl Child, Don Cunningham, L.V. Phelps, Howard Tinnes and John Truesdale. Music was by John Penne.

Survivors include his wife and two brothers, Walter and George.

BORN IN NEBRASKA

Born in Grand Island, Nebraska on December 12, 1880, he was the son of Herman and Laura Bacon Bartling. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Held on January 4, 1905, at Grand Island and is survived by his wife and companion of 53 years.

A graduate of Bradley University at Peoria and the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, Bartling came to Grinnell in the early 1900's.

BUYS JEWELRY STORE

In 1905, with Dick Nuckolls, he purchased a jewelry store from H.P. Proctor. When his partner died in 1943, Bartling became the sole owner of the store.

Bartling operated the store until April, 1953, when he sold to George D. Malcom of Moline, and retired.

ACTIVE IN COMMUNITY

Active in civic and community affairs, Bartling served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, then known as the Commercial Club. He also served as president of the Grinnell Country Club.

A lover of music, he played first violin in the Grinnell College orchestra for many years.

Bartling was also a longtime member of the Iowa State Association of Optometrists.
