Adele Schoop Seward, 86, of Brooklyn, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Idaho Falls, Idaho, of a coronary infarction.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Services were conducted by Pastor John Reynolds Jr. Interment was at the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Survived by a daughter, Linda Nangle of Cedar Rapids; a son, John (Hiya) Seward of Idaho Falls, Idaho; grandchildren, Christine (Keith) Little of Marion, Leslie (David) Kirkpatrick of Cedar Rapids, John W. Seward of Idaho Falls, Idaho; great-grandchildren, Shane Little, David T. and Heidi Kirkpatrick; a sister, Vivian (John) Link of Brooklyn, and sister-in-law, Mary Schoop of Marion.
Her parents, William Schoop and Lillian Schenk Schoop; and brother, William (Bill) Schoop, preceded her in death.
Adele was born on Aug. 20, 1921, near Bellevue. Her parents were William and Lillian Schoop. Adele married Robert Seward in 1953, and later divorced in 1957. She attended Wartburg College and graduated from St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, Ill. In 1943, Adele joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps as a Lt. JG., and was stationed at North Island, Calif., and Seattle, Wash., during WWII. Adele was also employed by The New York Infirmary for Women and Children, New York City, N.Y.; Red Cross Polio Epidemic, Kenosha, Wis.; FBI Health Services, Washington, D.C., where she served for at time as the nurse to J. Edgar Hoover; 1947-1953 Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, Ill.; Rose de Lima Hospital, Henderson, Nev.; Bellevue Hospital, Bellevue; Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids; and 1961-1983 Argonne National Laboratory West, Idaho Falls, Idaho.
In 1971, Adele and another registered nurse were certified with the title of Founder and became the first nurses in Idaho to hold the COHN Certification. She was the on-call nurse during President L.B. Johnson's dedication of the Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-I) as a National Historic Landmark. In 1983, she retired after 25 years of service. She moved to Brooklyn in 1993, where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Columbian Club. Adele enjoyed traveling throughout the world including such places as China, Egypt, Europe, Germany, Hawaii, Mexico, Venezuela, and many more great international destinations. Her hobbies included photography, genealogy, crossword puzzles, gardening, and volunteering. One of her most rewarding moments was dressing up and playing Santa Claus for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn and the National Heart Association of Iowa.
