Robert James Meldrem, son of James and Angelina Meldrem, was born in Brooklyn, July 21, 1883, and met death as the result of a fall in South Dakota, where he with his family had resided for the past three years. At the time of his death he was 32 years, 8 months and 23 days old.

He was united in marriage June 1, 1909, with Valeda Dougherty. To them was born a son, Howard, aged 2 years.

Besides a wife and son, he leaves a widowed mother, one brother, William and a sister, Mrs. Anna Mowery. Also Mrs. Myrtle Wiley who was brought up in the home of Father and Mother Meldrem and was recognized as a daughter and sister.

He was a member of the Brethren church in Brooklyn; also a member of the order of Knights of Pythias.

He was brought here for burial. The funeral services were held at the South Side church on Wednesday, April 19 at 10:30 o’clock. In addition to the relatives names, he had a wide circle of friends and an extended acquaintance, having been in the mail service as carrier for several years. The large attendance at the service as well as those who joined in the procession to the cemetery bespoke the esteem in which he was held in Brooklyn. The Fraternal Order of which he was a member attended in a body and marched to the cemetery where the beautiful and impressive burial service was read. The Pythian Sisters also attended the services to extend words of love and sympathy to the sorrowing wife.

Source: Unknown newspaper clipping found in scrapbook belonging to my great grandmother. The year of death of 1916 is calculated from birth date and age at death.
