Deborah E. Penning, 39, of Newton, a native of Grinnell, died Saturday, Nov. 13, in Mason City.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Grinnell Christian church, with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Organist was Jolene Jones, and pallbearers were Patrick Avalos, Robert Bullock, Roger Daniels, Jim Harms, Monty Harms, Ron Lowe and Jim Olson.
Burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetic Association.
The daughter of Gilmore and Frances Brooks Robbins Jr., she was born Feb. 26, 1954, in Grinnell. She was raised on the family farm in the Rock Creek area, and she graduated from Grinnell High School in 1972. She attended American Beauty School in Des Moines.
She was married to Ed Smith, and the couple had one daughter, Amy.
She worked for St. Francis Manor and DeLong Sportswear, and for the past six years she had worked at the Donaldson Company here. She was a member of United Auto Workers Local 1201.
She was married to Steven Penning Dec. 22, 1990, in Newton. He survives.
Also surviving are her daughter, Amy Smith of Carlisle; one stepson, Coy Penning of Newton; her parents; her grandmother, Marie Robbins of Grinnell; and four sisters, Diane Irwin of York, Neb., Denise Harms of Kellogg, Donna Puls of Grinnell and Darla Asberry of Kellogg.
