Funeral services for Mrs. C.F. Garrett were held Wednesday afternoon, May 31, at the Deep River Christian Church with Mr. Dean Lankford officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Evelyn Icenbice, pianist.
Casket bearers were Jerry Hopwood, Vaughn Hopwood, Dale McWilliams, Lowell Wolf, Jack Hopwood and Gary Hopwood. Interment was in Golden Rod Cemetery at Deep River.
Mrs. Garrett, 82, died Sunday, May 28, at a Montezuma nursing home.
The oldest child of W.F. and Nora Barnard Lake, Edna Lake Garrett was born Jan. 2, 1885 at Anamosa. In 1897 the family moved to Arlington, Iowa, where she assisted her father in the newspaper office. She was baptized into the Christian Church at Arlington. In 1912 the family bought the What Cheer Patriot and moved to What Cheer.
On Feb. 22, 1914, she married C.F. Garrett. To this union one son, C.N . (Junior) Garrett, was born.
In 1927 the Garretts moved to Deep River and bought the Deep River Record. They operated the newspaper for 30 years until their health began to fail.
She is survived by her husband; her daughter-in-law, Verna Garrett of Cedar Rapids; one grandson, James Lee Garrett; two great grandsons, Ronald Dean and Richard Lee Garrett, all of Marion; two sisters, Nellie Whyle of What Cheer and Nora Boldt of Waterloo; and one brother, Edward Lake of Spokane, Wash.
Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her parents, her son, two sisters and two brothers.
