Fern Phillips, 85, of 1405 Reed St., Grinnell, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Grinnell General Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Raymond Lott, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Barbara Lien. Pallbearers were Don Neighbors, Gordon Neighbors, Don Renaud, Clair Wilson, Leon Wilson and Paul Wilson. Flower bearers were Carol Sammon and Georgia Rydel. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
The daughter of Albert and Estella Martin Smith, she was born April 26, 1899 in Putnam County, Mo. She attended school there.
On Sept. 12, 1915, she was married to Fred Neighbors at Unionville, Mo. The couple lived in Unionville until 1929 when they moved to Grinnell.
While living in Grinnell, she worked at the Grinnell Glove Factory. Following her husband's death, she was married to Edward Phillips on Feb. 24, 1940, at Crown Point, Ind. They lived in Hammond, Ind., from 1940 to 1962 when they moved to Grinnell.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a volunteer at the Grinnell Senior Center.
She is survived by her children, Albert Neighbors of Grinnell and Alice Landers of Booneville; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Francis Smith of Des Moines; and one sister, Bertha Bagdon of Lansing, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, one brother and one sister.
