SUCCUMBS FRIDAY

Leland Clark, 84, longtime Malcom resident, died last Friday in a Grinnell hospital following failing health for the past few months.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. James Reynolds, pastor of the Malcom Methodist church, officiating. Mrs. Willard Heffner was organist.

Burial was in Ivy Hill cemetery with George Baustian, Lyle Bauman, Raymond Peters, Elmer Schultz, Lester Smith and Lloyd Winchell serving as pallbearers.

Born at Sedgwick, Kan. on Sept. 6, 1881, he was the son of Worth and Sara McFadden Clark. His family moved to the Ewart area south of Grinnell where he received his education. Later he taught school in the Ewart area.

On Christmas Day in 1908, he was married to Pearle Overman at Montezuma. The couple had two children, Floyd Clark of Grinnell and Mrs. Carl (Lucille) Larsen of Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Clark farmed for 22 years in the Ewart and Grinnell area. He had served as a rural mail carrier in the Malcom area and for 17 years owned and operated a grocery store in Malcom.

He was a member of the Ewart Presbyterian church since 1902 and had been a member of the Knights of Pythias and a resident of Poweshiek county for 55 years.

Survivors include his son and a daughter; a grandson, William Clark of Des Moines; two great-grandsons, Steve and Donald Clark; three sisters, Mrs. Madge Bentz of Miami, Fla., Ruth Clark of Grinnell and Mrs. D.M. (Iowa) Reynolds of Grinnell; and a brother, A.E. Clark of Walnut Grove, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on Sept. 18, 1959; and a granddaughter.
