The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Dec. 3, 1897

OBITUARY.

Mrs. Esther Wood Tufts, wife of Mr. John Tufts, died on Monday evening, November 29th, at eight o'clock, after an illness of five months in which she was patient in all her suffering and more than resigned to the fatal termination which seemed to be inevitable. She even prayed that it might come. She was conscious to the last, bidding her husband and children good-bye before she passed away. She was born in Norridgewock, Maine, in April, 1813. She was married to Mr. John Tufts in 1834, and became the mother of seven children, four sons and three daughters, all of whom are living. The family, except three of the children who are still in Maine, moved to Iowa in 1869 and settled at Victor. They later went to Illinois for a short time and twenty years ago they came to Grinnell, where they have resided since. While she was an earnest Christian her poor health did not permit her to be active in church work or a frequent attendant at church. In this seclusion it remained for near neighbors and her family only to learn the many excellent qualities of heart as a friend and of tender solicitude as a mother that characterized her life.

The funeral took place at the home on Main Street on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. E.M. Vittum officiating. A quartette consisting of Mrs. A.B. Mack, Miss Mary Mack, Messrs. E.B. Brande, and J.C. Walker, sang the hymns selected. Mr. Tufts, the husband, and four of the children,--Messrs. John A. and Frank B. Tufts, Mrs. Douglass and Mrs. C.L. Walker--and other relatives were present. The pall bearers were Messrs. D.S. Morrison, Harvey S. Bliss, C.F. Childs, F.C. Taylor, Frank Wyatt and Lucius Sanders. The interment was at Hazelwood.

The family are deeply grateful to the friends and neighbors whose kindness during the long illness and the last offices was shown in many helpful acts and sympathy and beautiful offerings of flowers.
