Edna Belle Vanden Berge, 97, of the Mayflower died Friday, Feb. 16, at the retirement complex.

Graveside services were conducted Monday morning at Sully Cemetery, with the Rev. Todd Schlitter, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, officiating. Burial was in Sully Cemetery.

The daughter of William and Emma Kent Holdsworth, she was born Nov. 19, 1895, on a farm near the Bethel Church north of Lynnville. She was raised in Sully and received her education in the Sully School District.. She was a bookkeeper for her father at the Holdsworth Implement Store and also served as assistant postmaster for Sully.

She was married to Samuel F. Vanden Berge Nov. 21, 1922, in Newton. The couple operated the Standard Oil station in Sully for many years. They moved to Newton in 1948 before moving to the Mayflower here in 1963. Following her husband's death in 1972, she returned to Newton to be with a great niece. She returned to the Mayflower in 1984.

Mrs. Vanden Berge was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Effie Mae Horn; and one brother, Oscar Holdsworth.
