After a lingering illness of several weeks with pneumonia, Hans H. Freese passed away at his home in Malcom, on Wed., Jan. 9th, at about 2:15 o'clock p.m.

Mr. Freese was born in Holstein, Germany, on the 31st of August, 1851. A the tender age of one and a half years death claimed both of his parents, and the family of seven in which he was the sixth child was reared by strangers. Nevertheless, he was given the privilege of attending school until fifteen years of age, when he laid aside his text-books to learn the blacksmith's trade. He followed that occupation for a short time and then engaged in farming.

On Oct. 27, 1878, Mr. Freese was united in marriage to Miss Catharine Fisher, also of Holstein. Three years later the young couple set out to seek their fortune in the United States, arriving at Montezuma on the 16th of May, 1881, and remaining ever afterwards residents of Poweshiek County. Twelve children were born to this union, two of whom, Charles and Elmer have preceded their father in death.

Farm-hand, renter, and land-owner were the successive steps in Mr. Freese's agricultural career, which creditable rise was due, at least in part, to his close application to business and wise management of affairs. For some fifteen years he has been living in retirement in Malcom. Of this span of years the last three were bereft of much of the cheer characteristic to former days, since the deceased suffered the loss of his faithful lifemate. Failing health, too, robbed life of its once bright glow. On the other hand, however, he experienced in abundant measure the affection of his children in his declining days.

Mr. Freese was conscious of spiritual values. He was a helpful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Malcom township to the end.

The deceased has passed by a generous margin the three score and ten years allotted man by the Psalmist. He attained the age of 77 years, 4 mo., and 8 days.

He is survived by his ten children; Henry of Plainview, Tex., Mrs. Carolyn Pyle, Mrs. Anna Kelm, Mrs. Ida Eisele, Mrs. Elizabeth Milburn, William and Frank of Malcom, Louis of Cedar Rapids, John of Des Moines, and Delmar of Toledo, Ia., twenty five grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan.12, at 1:30 o'clock from the Presbyterian church with Pastor Geo. F. Dirks in charge. Interment was made in the Ivy Hill Cemetery of Malcom, the six sons acting as pallbearers.

Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral were as follows, Henry Freese, Plainview, Texas, Louis Feese, Solon, Ia., John Freese and wife, Des Moines, Ia., Delmar Freese, Toledo, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. James Hamer of Albia, Ia., Fred Shafer, Albion, Ia., and Mrs. E. Kitzmar and son, Beaman, Ia.
